NOBIDA’s Advocacy Resources on Ohio’s Path to Increased Literacy

IDA of Northern Ohio (NOBIDA) is proud to be Northern Ohio’s dedicated resource that:
- Educates about dyslexia and appropriate instruction
- Advocates for early identification of dyslexia and educational opportunities
- Supports our community with professional development and resources
As a “3-peat” IDA National Branch Excellence Award winner, NOBIDA understands that evidence-based and advocacy-focused resources help advance our mission. We will work tirelessly until “Until Everyone Can Read.”
If you’re already a NOBIDA member, congratulations, you are already an advocate! Whether a parent, teacher, tutor, administrator, or person with dyslexia, you’ve experienced literacy inequity firsthand and know the challenges faced by members of our community. You know that structured literacy-based curricula and Ohio’s Dyslexia Laws move us closer to our goal. Yet, successful implementation and adjustments to new requirements can prove difficult within Ohio school districts and the greater literacy community. NOBIDA’s experienced leaders are eager to help ease these challenges.
Numerous branch leaders have directly influenced statewide advocacy efforts to pass Ohio’s Dyslexia Laws, and we understand what is at stake. Now that the laws are in full force, and the state of Ohio has greatly increased efforts to support the Science of Reading, we know Ohio’s educators, parents, and school administrators seek targeted professional development and training resources. Further, families with students beyond the fourth-grade level continue to navigate remedial literacy challenges due to insufficient literacy programs and a lack of consistent LD identification in the past.

Remember, NOBIDA is here to support your literacy efforts!

- Read Dr. Rebecca Tolson’s published case study research article: “Implementation of Federal and State Policies for Students Identified With or at-Risk for Dyslexia in Ohio.” Her research uses multiple interviews and document analysis as she studies how OH K-12 educators interpret and implement both federal and state policies for students identified with dyslexia. A follow-up to her 2020 NOBIDA Symposium presentation of a similar name, the research indicates that “when we know better, we do better!”
- Stay tuned for NOBIDA Professional Development opportunities to further guide you in implementing evidence-based dyslexia support.
